Healing Energy Techniques: How They Work and What to Expect

Healing energy techniques are complementary practices that work with the body’s energetic systems to identify and release patterns believed to contribute to physical discomfort, emotional heaviness or recurring stress. They sit alongside conventional healthcare, supporting overall wellbeing by addressing the energetic dimension that standard medicine does not typically focus on. Sessions are gentle, non-invasive and often available remotely.

What are healing energy techniques and where do they come from?

Healing energy techniques are a broad family of complementary practices that recognise the body as more than its physical structure. They operate on the understanding that thoughts, emotions and past experiences leave an imprint in the body’s energetic field, and that clearing those imprints can support the body’s own capacity to heal. Traditions as old as Traditional Chinese Medicine mapped meridians and energy flow more than two thousand years ago, and those ideas have informed countless modern approaches. Today, practitioners draw on both ancient frameworks and contemporary models of subconscious communication to build sessions that feel both structured and deeply personal.

What unites them is a shared premise: the body holds information. Whether a practitioner uses acupressure, muscle testing, intention or a combination of these, the goal is to listen to what the body is communicating and respond in a way that restores greater flow and ease. For many people, this is the first time they have felt truly heard at a level beyond their words.

How does muscle testing work in energy-based sessions?

Muscle testing, also called applied kinesiology, is a method used in many healing energy techniques to access the body’s innate intelligence. The principle is that the body gives a stronger or weaker response when asked a question or exposed to a stimulus, allowing a practitioner to identify areas of imbalance or trapped emotion without relying solely on conscious recall. It bypasses the analytical mind and speaks directly to the subconscious, where the vast majority of our patterns, beliefs and stored experiences actually reside.

In practice, a practitioner may use a client’s extended arm, a surrogate method or a self-testing technique to receive yes or no responses from the body. What this means for you as a client is that you do not need to remember a specific event or have words for what you are carrying. The body already knows, and muscle testing is simply a way of asking it. Many people find this deeply reassuring, particularly when they have spent years trying to think their way through something that lives at a much deeper level.

Because muscle testing does not require physical proximity, it also works remotely, with the practitioner using proxy or surrogate testing on behalf of the client. This is one of the reasons energy-based sessions have become genuinely accessible to people anywhere in the world.

What kinds of healing energy techniques are most commonly used today?

The landscape of healing energy techniques is wide, and it helps to understand a few of the most established approaches before choosing one that resonates with you.

The Emotion Code, developed by Dr Bradley Nelson, focuses specifically on identifying and releasing trapped emotions: emotional energies that have become lodged in the body following difficult experiences. According to Nelson’s framework, these trapped emotions can form a “Heart Wall,” a protective layer that the subconscious builds around the heart to shield it from further pain. Releasing trapped emotions and dismantling the Heart Wall is often described by clients as feeling lighter, more open and more available to connection.

The Body Code expands on the Emotion Code by addressing a much wider range of imbalances, including nutritional needs, structural misalignments, toxins, pathogens and energetic disturbances alongside emotional components. It uses a comprehensive mind-map system to help the practitioner navigate the body’s priorities in any given session, working with whatever the body indicates is most important in that moment.

The Belief Code goes a layer deeper still, working to identify and release negative belief systems held at the subconscious level. These are the quiet, often unexamined convictions that shape how we see ourselves and the world: “I am not enough,” “It is not safe to be seen,” “Love always leads to loss.” When these beliefs are encoded in the subconscious, they run silently in the background, influencing decisions, relationships and health in ways we rarely connect back to their source.

Other well-known healing energy techniques include Reiki, Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping), Thought Field Therapy, Healing Touch and various forms of breathwork and somatic practice. Each has its own history, training pathway and theoretical model, but they share a common orientation toward the whole person rather than a single symptom.

What can you expect from a healing energy session?

Many people arrive at their first energy session with a mixture of curiosity and healthy scepticism, which is entirely welcome. A good practitioner will never ask you to simply believe in anything. The session itself does the talking.

Most sessions begin with a brief conversation about what you are experiencing or hoping to address. This might be a long-held physical tension, recurring anxiety, difficulty in relationships, grief that will not shift or simply a sense of being stuck. The practitioner then uses their chosen method, often muscle testing, to identify what the body is ready to work on. You do not need to guide this process or dig through memories. You can simply rest and allow.

During a session, the practitioner may name emotions, organs, events or belief patterns that the body flags. Some clients experience immediate physical sensations: a wave of warmth, tears, a yawn or a deep breath. Others notice nothing during the session and then find, over the following days, that something has quietly shifted. Sleep improves. A long-held tension eases. A conversation that felt impossible becomes manageable. Processing continues after a session ends, and drinking water, resting and being gentle with yourself in the days that follow supports that integration.

Because these are complementary services, they work beautifully alongside whatever else you are doing for your health, whether that is conventional medical care, counselling, physiotherapy or your own movement and mindfulness practice. They are not a replacement for professional healthcare, and a practitioner with integrity will always make that clear.

How do healing energy techniques support emotional and physical wellbeing?

The connection between emotional experience and physical health is no longer fringe thinking. Research from the field of psychoneuroimmunology has established that chronic stress affects immune function, that unresolved grief has measurable physiological effects, and that the body and mind are in constant, bidirectional communication. Healing energy techniques take this mind-body relationship seriously and work directly within it.

Clients often seek energy work after years of managing symptoms without finding root-cause relief. They may have seen multiple practitioners, tried various treatments and still carry something they cannot name. Energy-based sessions offer a different question: not “what is wrong with you?” but “what is your body holding, and is it ready to let it go?” That shift in framing alone can be profoundly settling.

It is also worth noting that many people come not because something is dramatically wrong, but because they want to feel more fully themselves. More clear, more present, more connected to the life they are building. Energy work is as relevant for growth and expansion as it is for pain and struggle.
