Energy Healing Therapies Explained: Which One Is Right for You?

Energy healing therapies are complementary wellbeing practices that work with the body’s subtle energy systems to support emotional, mental and physical balance. Modalities range from Emotion Code and Reiki to acupuncture and sound healing. The right one depends on your goals, what resonates with you, and what a qualified practitioner actually offers.

What exactly are energy healing therapies and how do they work?

Energy healing therapies are non-invasive, complementary practices based on the idea that the body holds and responds to energetic information, including trapped emotions, limiting beliefs and stress patterns. Practitioners use a variety of techniques, from muscle testing to breath, movement and intention, to identify and release disruptions in the body’s energy field, supporting the body’s innate capacity to rebalance itself.

The umbrella of “energy healing” is genuinely wide. You might hear terms like biofield therapies, vibrational medicine or subtle energy work, and while the names differ, the underlying philosophy is shared: the body is not just physical. Emotions, memories and beliefs all leave an energetic imprint, and when those imprints accumulate, they can contribute to patterns of pain, anxiety, fatigue or feeling persistently stuck.

It is worth saying clearly that energy healing therapies are complementary, not a replacement for medical or psychological care. They work alongside conventional healthcare rather than instead of it, and a trustworthy practitioner will always honour that distinction.

Which energy healing therapies are most commonly practised today?

The most commonly practised energy healing therapies include the Emotion Code, Body Code, Belief Code, Reiki, acupuncture, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), sound healing and yoga therapy. Each has a different entry point: some work primarily with trapped emotions, others with the meridian system, physical body or the nervous system through breath and movement. No single modality is universally “best.”

Here is a closer look at several of the most widely used approaches:

Emotion Code. Developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson, the Emotion Code uses muscle testing (applied kinesiology) to identify trapped emotional energies stored in the body and releases them using a magnet or intention passed along the governing meridian. Many people seek it out for emotional heaviness, recurring anxiety or a sense of carrying old grief that hasn’t shifted with talking alone.

Body Code. An extension of the Emotion Code, the Body Code maps six categories of imbalance: energies, circuits and systems, toxins, pathogens, misalignments and nutrition. It offers a more comprehensive lens, looking at the whole person rather than emotions in isolation. Sessions are conducted remotely or in person using the same muscle-testing principle.

Belief Code. The newest layer in Dr. Nelson’s system, the Belief Code specifically targets limiting beliefs, negative programs and core wounds held in the subconscious mind. Where the Emotion Code releases feelings, the Belief Code addresses the stories we have come to accept as true about ourselves and the world.

Reiki. A Japanese technique, Reiki involves a practitioner channelling universal life energy through light touch or hands placed near the body. It is gentle, deeply relaxing and widely available. Many people use it for stress reduction and to support recovery from illness or surgery.

Acupuncture. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture uses fine needles at specific meridian points to move stagnant qi (life force energy). It is one of the most extensively researched complementary therapies and is used for pain management, sleep, hormonal balance and much more.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). Sometimes called tapping, EFT combines elements of cognitive reframing with tapping on acupressure points. It is often self-administered once learned, making it a useful day-to-day tool for anxiety, cravings and emotional regulation.

Sound healing. Using instruments such as singing bowls, tuning forks or vocal toning, sound healing works on the principle that different frequencies can shift brainwave states and encourage deep relaxation or emotional release.

Yoga therapy. Distinct from a yoga class, yoga therapy is a personalised, evidence-informed practice that uses posture, breathwork, meditation and lifestyle guidance to address specific health goals. The International Association of Yoga Therapists describes it as the adaptation of yoga practices for individuals with health challenges. It sits at a meaningful intersection of energy work, somatic practice and holistic counselling.

How do you choose the right energy healing therapy for your needs?

Choosing the right energy healing therapy comes down to three practical questions: What are you hoping to shift? How do you prefer to engage (active or receptive)? And does the practitioner you are considering have genuine training and a clear scope of practice? There is no single correct path. Starting with what feels most accessible and working with a qualified guide is usually more useful than searching for the “perfect” modality before you begin.

A few honest signposts that can help:

If you are carrying emotional weight that feels pre-verbal, something from childhood or long before you had language for it, the Emotion Code or Body Code can be a surprisingly gentle and effective starting point. Because sessions can be done remotely and do not require you to talk through painful memories in detail, they suit people who find talk therapy re-traumatising or exhausting.

If you are working with a persistent belief that you are not enough, not loveable or somehow fundamentally flawed, the Belief Code addresses exactly that layer. Talking about a limiting belief and energetically releasing it are two quite different experiences, and for many people the latter creates a shift that years of affirmations alone have not managed.

If you want something embodied, something that involves your breath, your movement and your nervous system, yoga therapy offers that integration. It is particularly well suited to people navigating chronic stress, burnout, chronic pain or a recovery journey, where the body needs as much attention as the mind.

If you are new to all of this and feeling a little uncertain, holistic counselling can be a warm and grounded entry point. It offers a supportive space to make sense of what you are experiencing before exploring which energy-based tools might complement your journey.

One concrete thing worth knowing: a 2019 review published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that biofield therapies (including Reiki and therapeutic touch) showed statistically significant effects on pain, anxiety and fatigue in clinical populations. That does not mean every modality works for every person, but it does suggest that energy-based approaches are worthy of serious, open-minded consideration rather than dismissal.

Can energy healing therapies be combined, or should you choose just one?

Energy healing therapies can absolutely be combined, and many practitioners work across more than one modality. The Emotion Code, Body Code and Belief Code, for example, are designed to layer together naturally. Yoga therapy pairs well with counselling. The key is working with someone who knows when to draw on which tool, rather than applying every technique to every person regardless of fit. Quality over quantity always.

It is also worth knowing that more is not always faster. The body needs time to integrate after sessions, particularly emotional release work. Most experienced practitioners will space sessions appropriately and check in with you about what is landing rather than moving at a pace that feels overwhelming.

Combining modalities works best when there is a thread of intention running through the work: a clear sense of what you are moving toward, not just what you are moving away from. That is where holistic counselling can be a valuable companion, helping you articulate your goals and track your progress in a grounded, compassionate way.
