How to Release Trapped Emotions with Energy Healing
Trapped emotions release is the process of identifying emotional energies that have become lodged in the body after painful or overwhelming experiences, then clearing them so they no longer distort your physical health, relationships or sense of self. Energy healing modalities, particularly the Emotion Code, use muscle testing to locate these energies and gentle intention to let them go, often producing noticeable shifts in a single session.
What are trapped emotions and why do they get stuck?
Trapped emotions are balls of energetic residue left behind when a feeling is experienced too quickly, too intensely or in a moment when expressing it was simply not safe. Rather than moving through the body and releasing naturally, the emotional energy lodges in specific tissues, organs or energetic pathways, where it continues to vibrate at its original frequency long after the event has passed. Over time, that low-level interference can influence everything from physical pain to recurring thought patterns to the way you connect with other people.
Think of a moment when grief hit so fast there was no time to process it, or when anger had to be swallowed to keep the peace. In those instants the body does something protective: it absorbs the energy so you can keep functioning. The problem is that what gets absorbed does not simply dissolve. Dr Bradley Nelson, who developed the Emotion Code, estimates that people carry dozens of these energetic imprints by the time they reach adulthood, many of them formed in childhood or even inherited from previous generations as what he calls inherited trapped emotions.
Common signs that trapped emotions may be playing a role in your life include persistent tension in the neck or chest for no clear physical reason, emotional reactions that feel disproportionate to the situation, difficulty trusting others, a vague sense of heaviness that does not lift even when life circumstances are good, and physical complaints that medical testing cannot fully explain.
How does the trapped emotions release process work in an Emotion Code session?
In an Emotion Code session, a certified practitioner uses muscle testing, a form of applied kinesiology, to communicate with the body’s subconscious intelligence. The body acts as its own lie detector: a strong response signals yes, a weak response signals no. Working through a chart of 60 possible emotional energies grouped into columns and rows, the practitioner identifies the specific emotion that is ready to be released, when it was absorbed and where it is sitting in the body. The release itself is performed by running a magnet or the hand along the governing meridian, the energy pathway that runs over the crown of the head and down the spine, several times with focused intention.
The process is gentle and non-invasive. Sessions can be conducted in person or at a distance because energy is not confined by physical space, something that surprises many first-time clients but is widely reported as equally effective. After a release, a short period of processing, sometimes called a processing time of up to a day or two, is common as the body integrates the change. People often describe feeling lighter, calmer or unexpectedly emotional in a relieved way in the hours that follow.
One of the most meaningful aspects of the Emotion Code is its ability to identify a Heart-Wall: a layered defence built from trapped emotions around the heart that develops when life has felt repeatedly unsafe or painful. Nelson’s research with his own clients suggested that the majority of people carry a Heart-Wall, and clearing it tends to produce some of the most profound shifts in openness, self-worth and the ability to give and receive love.
Can trapped emotions release support physical as well as emotional wellbeing?
Yes. Because trapped emotional energies vibrate within specific tissues, their presence can contribute to physical discomfort, fatigue or a sense of bodily disconnection, not as a sign of weakness but as a straightforward consequence of energy interference. Releasing them removes that interference, which can support the body’s own innate capacity to heal and rebalance. This is why clients sometimes come for help with emotional pain and notice improvements in long-standing physical tension as an additional benefit.
It is worth being clear: energy healing is a complementary wellbeing practice, not a substitute for medical or psychological care. If you have a medical concern, please consult a qualified healthcare professional. Energy work and conventional care are not mutually exclusive. Many clients find that addressing the emotional layer alongside conventional treatment creates a fuller, more sustainable recovery than either approach alone.
The Body Code, an expanded system that builds on the Emotion Code, goes even further by looking at six categories of imbalance: energies (including trapped emotions), circuits and systems, toxins, pathogens, structural misalignments and nutritional deficiencies. Where the Emotion Code focuses specifically on emotional energies, the Body Code treats the body as a complete ecosystem and works to identify whatever imbalance is most relevant at that moment.
What can you do between sessions to support the process?
Energy healing sessions do the heavy lifting, but there are simple, practical ways to support the process in everyday life. Staying well hydrated matters more than it sounds: the body conducts energy through water, and many practitioners note that clients who drink enough water report smoother processing periods. Gentle movement, whether that is a slow walk, restorative yoga or simply stretching before bed, helps the nervous system integrate shifts rather than tightening back around old patterns.
Journalling after a session is another underrated tool. You do not need to write extensively. Even a few sentences noting what feels different, what surfaced or what surprised you gives the subconscious somewhere to land the new awareness. Sleep is equally important: much of the body’s energetic reorganisation happens overnight, which is why vivid dreams occasionally follow a session.
Perhaps most importantly, try to extend some patience toward yourself in the days after a release. Clearing a trapped emotion that has been in place for years is a real event in the body’s experience. Give it the same respect you would give any genuine process of recovery and renewal.
How do you know if trapped emotions release is working?
The signs that energy clearing is working are often subtle at first and then, in retrospect, quite striking. You might notice that a situation which used to trigger a strong reaction simply does not pull the same charge anymore. A conversation you had been avoiding becomes easier to begin. Physical tension that had been a constant background presence quietly recedes. Sometimes clients report that they cannot quite articulate what has changed but that something fundamental feels different, as though a low hum they had grown so used to they stopped noticing has finally gone quiet.
Progress is rarely linear. The subconscious works in layers, and what comes up in session two or three may feel more intense than session one, not because things are getting worse but because the system is now confident enough to release something it was protecting more carefully. Trust the process, stay curious about what arises, and bring any observations to your next session so the practitioner can factor them into the work.
The most consistent marker of progress is a growing sense of agency: the feeling that your past experiences no longer have an automatic grip on your present choices. That shift, quiet as it often is, tends to ripple outward into relationships, creativity, work and physical vitality in ways clients rarely anticipate when they first sit down and wonder whether any of this could possibly help them.
