Emotion Code by Bradley Nelson: How Sessions Actually Work

The Emotion Code, developed by Dr Bradley Nelson, is an energy-based method designed to identify and release trapped emotions stored in the body. Practitioners use muscle testing (applied kinesiology) and a set of emotion charts to locate specific emotional energies, then release them using a magnet or intention drawn along the governing meridian. Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes and can be done in person or remotely.

Who is Bradley Nelson and why did he develop the Emotion Code?

Dr Bradley Nelson is an American chiropractor and energy healer who spent decades in clinical practice noticing that many of his patients carried emotional residue from past events that physical treatment alone could not resolve. He formalised his findings into the Emotion Code, publishing the original book in 2007, with a significantly expanded edition released in 2019. His premise is straightforward: unresolved emotional experiences do not simply disappear. They can become lodged in the body as a kind of vibrational imprint, influencing physical sensations, relationships, and overall wellbeing long after the original event has passed.

Nelson trained as a chiropractor and draws on principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically the meridian system, as well as concepts from applied kinesiology. His broader system, the Body Code, grew out of the Emotion Code and addresses additional categories of imbalance beyond trapped emotions alone. For anyone exploring this work, understanding where these ideas come from helps you arrive at a session with realistic expectations and genuine curiosity rather than scepticism or over-inflated hope.

What are trapped emotions in the context of the Emotion Code?

Trapped emotions, as defined within the Emotion Code framework, are specific emotional energies believed to become lodged in the body during moments of intense stress, grief, overwhelm or trauma. Rather than being fully processed and released, these emotions are thought to remain as a kind of energetic residue that can contribute to physical discomfort, emotional reactivity or persistent patterns of behaviour. Each trapped emotion corresponds to one of 60 emotions listed across two charts in Nelson’s system.

The idea is not that you are walking around consciously feeling these old emotions. Most people are entirely unaware of them. They tend to show up instead as a vague heaviness, a recurring relationship difficulty, a physical tension that has no obvious cause, or an emotional trigger that seems disproportionate to what is actually happening. That recognition, the moment when something finally makes sense of a long-standing pattern, is one of the things clients most often describe as meaningful when they reflect on their sessions.

It is worth noting that the Emotion Code is a complementary wellbeing practice, not a medical or psychological diagnosis. If you are working through significant mental health concerns, it is always wise to do so alongside qualified professional support.

How does an Emotion Code session actually work, step by step?

An Emotion Code session follows a clear structure, which makes it far less mysterious once you know what to expect. The practitioner opens the session by connecting with the client (either in person or via phone or video), setting an intention for the work, and entering a light state of focus. They then use muscle testing to communicate with the body’s innate intelligence, asking yes or no questions to identify whether a trapped emotion is present and, if so, which one from the chart it corresponds to.

The muscle testing itself is simple. In person, a practitioner might use the client’s arm to test resistance. Remotely, many certified practitioners use surrogate testing or self-testing, which Nelson addresses directly in his training. Once an emotion is identified, the practitioner may ask a few more questions to understand the approximate age at which it was absorbed and whether it may have been inherited (what Nelson calls a “Heart-Wall” emotion or an inherited trapped emotion passed down through the lineage). This context is not always available or necessary, but when it does surface, clients often find it illuminating.

Release happens by drawing a magnet or the practitioner’s hand along the governing meridian, which runs from the upper lip, over the crown of the head and down the spine. This is done three times for a standard trapped emotion, and ten times for an inherited one. Most people feel a subtle shift, sometimes a quiet exhale, a momentary emotion rising and passing, or simply a felt sense of something lifting. Others feel very little in the session itself and notice changes in the days following.

A single session can clear multiple trapped emotions, though the number varies. Nelson suggests in his book that the body often benefits from a short integration period between sessions, which is why practitioners typically space them at least a few days apart.

What is the Heart-Wall and why does it matter?

One of the most talked-about concepts in the Emotion Code is the Heart-Wall. Nelson describes it as a protective barrier the subconscious mind builds around the heart using trapped emotions when a person experiences repeated or intense emotional pain. The intention is protective, like emotional armour. The unintended consequence is that it can also mute positive feelings: joy, love, connection, creativity and a sense of purpose.

Clearing a Heart-Wall is generally a multi-session process. Nelson estimates in his published research and case studies that roughly 93 percent of people he tested had a Heart-Wall of some kind, and that it takes an average of three to four sessions to clear it fully, though this varies considerably from person to person. Clients who have worked through their Heart-Wall often describe feeling more open, more present in relationships, and less guarded in ways they had not even noticed they were guarded before.

Can Emotion Code sessions work remotely?

Yes, and this is one of the aspects of the Emotion Code that surprises people most. Remote sessions work on the understanding that energy is not bound by physical proximity, a principle that sits within broader energy medicine frameworks. Practitioners use proxy or surrogate muscle testing to connect with a client at a distance, and many certified Emotion Code practitioners report no meaningful difference in outcomes between in-person and remote work.

For practical purposes, remote sessions are enormously convenient. You can be in your home, settled on your couch with a cup of tea, while your practitioner works through the session on your behalf. Some clients find this format easier to receive because there is no travel, no clinical setting and no performance pressure. You simply show up as you are.

Zoe Bentley Healing offers Emotion Code sessions both in person and remotely, making it accessible no matter where you are located.

What should you expect after an Emotion Code session?

The period immediately following an Emotion Code session is often called a “processing period.” Nelson describes this in his work and most certified practitioners echo the same experience from their clients. For some people, the 24 to 48 hours after a session feel a little tender or emotionally heightened, not in a distressing way, but in the way that follows any genuine release. Old memories may surface briefly. You might feel more tired than usual, or more emotional. Drinking extra water and being gentle with yourself during this window is genuinely useful advice, not just filler.

Many clients report feeling lighter, calmer or simply less reactive in the days that follow. Physical sensations that had been persistent sometimes ease. Relationship dynamics occasionally shift. These are not guaranteed outcomes, and every person responds differently, but they are common enough to be worth knowing about before you book.

What the Emotion Code is not is a quick fix or a replacement for therapy, medical care or other professional support. It works best as part of a broader commitment to your own wellbeing, used alongside the other practices and support that serve you.
