What Is Energy Healing? A Clear Guide for Beginners

Energy healing is a category of complementary wellbeing practice that works with the body’s subtle energy systems, releasing blocked or trapped emotions and restoring a sense of balance. It sits alongside, not in place of, conventional medical care. Practitioners use various methods to identify and clear disruptions that may be contributing to physical discomfort, emotional heaviness or persistent stress.

What does energy healing actually mean?

Energy healing refers to any approach that treats the human body as more than its physical parts, acknowledging the emotional, mental and energetic layers that influence how we feel day to day. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, these practices look for the root causes stored in the body’s energy field, often as trapped emotions or limiting beliefs that have accumulated over a lifetime.

The idea that the body holds an energetic dimension is ancient. Traditional Chinese Medicine has mapped meridians, or energy pathways, for thousands of years. Ayurvedic traditions speak of prana, the life force that flows through every living being. Modern approaches like the Emotion Code and Body Code, developed by Dr Bradley Nelson, translate this understanding into a structured, systematic framework that practitioners can apply consistently, session after session.

What sets energy healing apart from a general relaxation practice is intention and method. A session typically involves muscle testing (a form of biofeedback that uses the body’s responses to identify areas of imbalance), followed by targeted release work using magnets or focused intention drawn along governing meridian lines. The result, for many people, is a noticeable sense of lightness, calm or clarity that builds across sessions.

What kinds of energy healing modalities are there?

Energy healing is a broad umbrella. Common modalities include Reiki (a Japanese technique involving light touch or hands held above the body), acupuncture, sound healing, EFT tapping, and the Emotion Code, Body Code and Belief Code systems. Each has its own framework, but all share the core premise that emotional and energetic blocks can affect physical and mental wellbeing.

The Emotion Code, for example, works specifically with trapped emotions: feelings like grief, anger or fear that became lodged in the body during difficult life experiences and were never fully processed. The Body Code expands this to cover imbalances across six main categories, including nutrition, structural issues, pathogens and circuits or systems. The Belief Code goes deeper still, addressing subconscious belief systems that quietly shape self-worth, relationships and the choices we make without realising it.

Yoga therapy is another modality that bridges the energetic and the physical. Rather than a standard yoga class, yoga therapy is one-to-one or small-group work tailored to a person’s specific constitution and concerns. Breath, movement and stillness are used intentionally to support nervous system regulation, address chronic tension patterns and cultivate a more grounded relationship with the body. Holistic counselling, meanwhile, creates space to explore the emotional and psychological layers of what someone is carrying, integrating talk-based support with an understanding of the whole person.

Is energy healing supported by any evidence?

Research in this space is growing, though it remains in early stages. A 2019 systematic review published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that Reiki consistently showed significant reduction in anxiety and pain compared with control groups across multiple studies. While large-scale randomised controlled trials for newer modalities like the Emotion Code are still limited, thousands of practitioners and clients report meaningful, measurable shifts in mood, physical comfort and overall resilience.

It is worth being clear about what energy healing is and is not. It is a complementary practice, meaning it works best alongside conventional medical and psychological care rather than replacing it. No ethical practitioner will suggest you discontinue prescribed treatment. The goal is to support the whole person, filling in the gaps that a purely physical approach sometimes leaves.

Many clients arrive having already done significant work with doctors, therapists or physiotherapists and still feeling stuck. Energy healing often helps to shift what talk alone or physical treatment has not fully resolved, particularly when there is an emotional component that has been difficult to access directly. That said, every person responds differently, and no specific outcome can be promised or guaranteed.

What can you expect from a typical energy healing session?

Sessions are calm, conversational and often surprisingly efficient. Whether you meet in person or online, a practitioner will usually begin by checking in about what you are hoping to address. There is no need to relive difficult experiences in detail, which is one of the reasons energy healing appeals to people who find traditional talk therapy overwhelming or exhausting.

In an Emotion Code or Body Code session, the practitioner uses muscle testing, either with the client directly or through a process called proxy testing for remote sessions, to ask the body yes-or-no questions. This allows the work to be guided by the body’s own intelligence rather than conscious analysis alone. When a trapped emotion or imbalance is identified, it is released using a magnet drawn along the governing meridian (a central energy channel that runs along the spine). The whole process is gentle, non-invasive and can be done fully clothed, seated or lying down.

Yoga therapy sessions look different. You might spend time in supported restorative postures, work through breath practices designed for your nervous system, or talk through what is arising emotionally as you move. Holistic counselling sessions follow a more traditional conversational structure, but with attention to the body’s signals throughout, checking in with sensations, breath patterns and energy levels as part of the conversation.

Many people notice something shifting within the first session. Others find the changes are more gradual, unfolding over several weeks as the body integrates the work. Either experience is completely normal.

How do you know if energy healing might be right for you?

Energy healing tends to resonate with people who feel that something is being carried beneath the surface, emotional weight, old patterns or physical symptoms that do not have a clear medical explanation. It also suits those who are already doing well but want to go deeper: releasing what no longer serves, building emotional resilience and feeling more at home in their own body.

You do not need to believe wholeheartedly in energy healing for it to be worth exploring. Curiosity and a willingness to notice what shifts is more than enough to begin. The best approach is to come with an open mind, share honestly what you are experiencing, and let the work speak for itself over a session or two.

If you are drawn to the Emotion Code, Body Code or Belief Code, these are precisely the modalities offered here at Zoe Bentley Healing, alongside yoga therapy and holistic counselling. Each session is a collaborative, unhurried space where you are seen as a whole person, not a list of symptoms. Whether you are brand new to energy work or returning after a break, you are welcome here.
