What Does an Emotion Code Practitioner Do in a Session?
An Emotion Code practitioner uses muscle testing (kinesiology) to identify trapped emotions stored in the body, then releases them using a magnet or the hand drawn along the governing meridian. A single session typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes and can be done in person or remotely. Most clients leave feeling noticeably lighter, calmer or clearer than when they arrived.
What is the Emotion Code and where does it come from?
The Emotion Code is a structured energy healing method developed by Dr Bradley Nelson, a chiropractor who published his findings in the book The Emotion Code (first released in 2007). The premise is straightforward: unresolved emotional experiences can become lodged in the body as energetic imprints, influencing physical wellbeing, relationships and how we move through the world. The Emotion Code gives practitioners a repeatable framework for finding and releasing those imprints, one trapped emotion at a time.
Unlike talk therapy, you do not need to relive or narrate a painful memory for the process to work. The practitioner communicates with the subconscious mind through muscle testing, which acts as a kind of yes-or-no feedback system. The body, in this model, already knows exactly what it is holding and in what order it needs to be addressed. The practitioner’s role is simply to listen carefully to those signals and act on them with precision.
What does an Emotion Code practitioner actually do during a session?
An Emotion Code practitioner begins by setting a clear intention, tuning in energetically and establishing a reliable muscle-testing baseline with the client. From there, the session follows a consistent sequence: identify the trapped emotion, find any relevant context (such as the approximate age it was absorbed or whether it belongs to the client or was inherited), release it, and confirm the release before moving on.
Here is how that typically unfolds in practice.
Opening and intention setting. The practitioner connects with the client, either in the room or via proxy for distance sessions, and explains what to expect. Many practitioners say a brief prayer or set an intention to work only for the client’s highest good. This sets a calm, focused tone.
Muscle testing. The practitioner uses some form of muscle testing to communicate with the subconscious. In person this might involve the client holding out an arm while light downward pressure is applied. For distance sessions, the practitioner often uses self-testing (such as a finger-pinch method or a pendulum) or surrogate testing. A strong response means yes; a weak response means no. It sounds simple because, in practice, it is.
Identifying the trapped emotion. Using the Emotion Code chart, which lists 60 emotions grouped into columns and rows, the practitioner narrows down the specific emotion through a series of binary questions. Is it in column A or B? Row one or two? The subconscious guides the process efficiently, often identifying an emotion within a few focused questions.
Gathering context. Once the emotion is identified, the practitioner may ask additional questions: Was there a specific event? Is there anything else to know before releasing? Is this emotion inherited (passed down through family lines, sometimes called a Heart-Wall or inherited trapped emotion)? This context is not always necessary, but it can be meaningful for the client.
The release. The release itself is gentle. The practitioner intends for the emotion to be released and runs a magnet (or their hand) down the governing meridian, which runs along the spine and over the top of the head, three times. This is enough to clear the energetic imprint. If the emotion is inherited, it is rolled three extra times to account for generational depth.
Confirmation and continuation. The practitioner tests again to confirm the emotion has cleared, then checks whether the body is ready to continue. Some sessions clear five emotions; others clear fifteen. The body sets the pace, and a skilled practitioner respects that boundary rather than pushing for more.
Does an Emotion Code session work differently online compared to in person?
Distance or online sessions work through proxy testing: the practitioner acts as a stand-in for the client’s energy field, which in the Emotion Code framework is understood to be accessible regardless of physical location. Many practitioners and their clients report that results feel just as tangible in a remote session as in person. The main practical difference is that you simply need a quiet space, a phone or video call, and a willingness to receive.
This makes the Emotion Code uniquely accessible. A client in rural Queensland can work with a practitioner on the other side of the country, and the session unfolds in exactly the same sequence described above. The governing meridian is still traced, the muscle testing is still conducted, and the releases still happen in real time.
What might you notice after a session with an Emotion Code practitioner?
Responses vary from person to person, and no specific outcome is guaranteed. That said, many clients describe a sense of lightness or relief after a session, as though something they had been carrying for a long time has quietly put itself down. Some notice changes fairly quickly: better sleep, less tension in the body, a shift in how they respond to a recurring stressor. Others notice a subtler unfolding over the days that follow, sometimes called a processing period.
Dr Nelson’s work suggests that a common energetic pattern is what he calls a Heart-Wall, a protective barrier built from layers of trapped emotions around the heart over years of difficult experiences. Clearing a Heart-Wall, which can take several sessions, has been associated by many clients with feeling more open, more connected and more able to give and receive love freely. That is not a clinical claim, but it is one of the most consistent things clients report.
It is worth noting that the Emotion Code is a complementary wellbeing modality. It sits alongside, rather than in place of, medical or psychological care. If you are navigating a significant health concern, always keep your healthcare team informed.
How is the Emotion Code different from other energy healing approaches?
What sets the Emotion Code apart from broader energy healing practices is its structure. There is a defined chart, a clear protocol, and a repeatable process that a trained practitioner follows every time. That consistency means sessions have a dependable shape, which many people find reassuring, especially if they are new to energy work and unsure what to expect.
The Emotion Code also sits within a wider system developed by Dr Nelson called the Body Code, which extends the same muscle-testing framework to cover nutritional imbalances, structural issues, pathogens and more. And beyond that, the Belief Code addresses limiting belief systems held at a subconscious level. Together they form a layered approach to holistic wellbeing, though each can be used independently.
For many people, the Emotion Code is a natural entry point: it is focused, gentle and often produces noticeable results within the first session or two, making it easy to understand experientially before exploring the broader system.
